DNA wins award for lighting up celebrity chef's heritage-listed restaurant

Every detail was considered and meticulously planned before a single wire was run
— DNA Director, Adam McLeod

SITUATION

In 2017, Celebrity Chef Andre Ursini commissioned his second restaurant project —  a renovated bluestone building located on Kensington Road, Rose Park. An affluent restaurant like Orso required electrical architecture to reflect the high-end patrons it seeks to attract. As such, DNA were awarded the notable contract to ensure quality underpinned every decision made during the 12-month project.

TASK

Without any firm designs or scope of requirements delivered, DNA assessed client requirements and constructed a plan comprising practical and elegant solutions. The premises was an empty shell of an old furniture store, which DNA would transform into a into a functional restaurant with open kitchen, alfresco dining, cellar and upstairs offices and boardroom.

“The absence of a brief or scope of requirements was a significant commercial factor of the Orso project. Our team was shown an empty work-site, and upon inspection DNA were tasked with creating a vision, developing a plan and proposing a timeline to complete the work,” said DNA director Adam McLeod.

During the entire construction process DNAs primary focus was to retain heritage features to showcase in the end product.

ACTION

Work commenced in January 2018 with DNA deploying a large team of six electrical experts — from site supervisors, leading-hands, tradesmen and apprentices. Utilising computer software, DNA designed electrical layouts and constructed client approvals via email. Tablets, iPads and mobile phones ensured constant communication between workers while on-site, putting DNA and the client on the same page throughout the entire process. The scope of work comprised:

  • Rewiring existing heritage listed building

  • Installing new consumer mains, submains, main meter board and distribution boards

  • Wiring new kitchen extension to the rear of building

  • Designing and wiring DALI/KNX lighting control and automation systems*

  • Installing KNX touchscreens for lighting and automation control*

  • Wiring and installing MRA audio system*

  • Installing provisions for solar carport and voltage optimiser

  • Installing exit and emergency lighting

When asked about the most significant accomplishment on the Orso project, Mr. McLeod noted the lighting installation: “The lighting installation at Orso's is our proudest accomplishment. It comprises over 300 lighting points, including LED downlights, LED strip lighting in cabinetry, stair tread lighting, spotlights, uplighters, garden lighting, and external feature lighting. The result is stunning.”

RESULTS

With over 2175 working hours on the project, DNA put the final touches on the Orso restaurant electrical architecture in November 2018. The restaurant opened without delay to eager patrons later that month, and was described by critics as ‘sparing no expense’ in transforming the former bluestone manor into an airy and fashionable dining experience.

A testament to DNA’s quality, the company was awarded a Certificate of High Commendation at the NECA SA/NT 2019 Excellence Award for its work on the Orso Restaurant. “We’re extremely proud of our teams’ work on Orso. Every detail was considered and meticulously planned before a single wire was run. The hardwork and extra hours of research really paid off, and the result speaks for itself,” said Mr. McLeod.

On the basis of this project, DNA’s site manager has now secured additional projects to manage due to his excellent work ethic and can-do attitude — an ideology that flows throughout the entire DNA team.

Luxury builder recommends DNA for smart-home automation system on Myrtle Bank project

“We are extremely happy that we were able to customise the build to suit our lifestyle perfectly”
— Mr. Bugg

SITUATION

Mr. Bugg, a recently retired Sales Director, commissioned a new single-story open-living establishment in Adelaide eastern suburb Myrtle Bank, situated within the affluent city council of Unley. Exclusive builder Daniel Jordan Homes, who take on limited projects, selected DNA Electrical as their preferred partner on the 450 m2 property. DNA’s can-do attitude, premium workmanship and specialisation in smart-home automation were all factors in the clients’ decision to hire them.

TASK

DNA were tasked with designing, installing and testing complicated automation systems throughout the luxurious 5-bedroom, 2-bathroom home, which comprised powder room, walk-in-robe, ensuite, butler’s pantry, and home theatre room. In addition, electrical work was required for indoor-outdoor areas including kitchen, lap pool, and zen garden. Mr. Bugg’s main objective was to simplify his home life by controlling home entertainment, temperature, lighting and blinds using the latest technology in smart home automation.

ACTION

Work commenced in March 2016 with DNA deploying a large team of five electrical experts — site supervisor, leading-hand, tradesman and two apprentices. From skylights to security programming, bathroom window frosts to outdoor heating, quality componentry was installed throughout the premises including the following (but not limited to):

  • 141 lighting points

  • 68 C-Bus controlled lighting groups

  • 62 double power outlets

  • 11 automated C-Bus blind controllers

  • 4 zones of garden lighting

  • 3 motion sensors

  • 3 C-bus controlled skylights

  • 2 zones of under floor heating

  • 2 zones of pool lighting

  • 2 radiant heating panels within alfresco ceiling

RESULTS

DNA finalised testing of all electrical systems on the Myrtle Bank property in March 2017, fulfilling the project timeline and budget requirements. Upon completion, Mr. Bugg said “I’m very pleased with the level of expertise and professionalism that DNA displayed. This project was complex, and we are extremely happy that we were able to customise the build to suit our lifestyle perfectly”.

When asked what pleased him most about the smart home system, Mr. Bugg said “It’s so satisfying that now I can press a single button to control otherwise time consuming or complicated tasks. Multiple remote controls are a thing of the past,” said Mr. Bugg. In addition, Mr Bugg commended DNA’s attention to detail, like clearly labelling switches and applications to make it easy and convenient for any friends or family members visiting to pick up and use.

Mr. Bugg said DNA’s smart home system made him feel more relaxed and in control. “The master-off switch beside our bed is a real time-saver. Now there’s no need to check every room at night to see whether someone has left the lights on. I sleep much easier these days,” said Mr. Bugg.

DNA Electrical commended for quality workmanship on Rosslyn Park 'Smart Home'

DNA were able to bring to life our ideas ... the home control is also a good addition ... we couldn’t live without it.
— Mr. Liew

SITUATION

Mr. Liew, required electrical services for a new luxury and prestige house build in Rosslyn Park, Adelaide. This included work to span the 550 m², triple-story, open-living house. The client recognised they needed to partner with a premium electrical company who could execute their vision, while maintaining the highest quality of workmanship. DNA Electrical Systems was recommended by award-winning architects and home builders Chasecrown because of their strong work ethic, core values, and ability to respect others’ time.

TASK

DNA had to tackle a large and complicated site that required not only general electrical work, but home automation, security, internet and audio. Work extended beyond the 5-bedroom 2-bathroom home — complete with powder room and home theatre — into outside areas such as the garden, pool and storage rooms. Mr. Liew stated that he required a one-button lifestyle combined with the latest technology, from CCTV security and C-Bus lighting control to under floor heating automation and multi-room audio systems.

ACTION

DNA commenced work in February 2016 with a team of five: a site supervisor, leading hand, tradesman, and two apprentices. A broad range of high quality componentry was installed, including Clipsal C-Bus, Clipsal Cat 6 data cabling, Clipsal Starserve, Ness M1 alarms, Sonos Home Theatre Audio, and Unios Lighting. During the build DNA supplied, installed and wired all of the following (but not limited to):

  • 173 lighting points

  • 77 double power outlets

  • 51 C-Bus controlled lighting groups

  • 30 ethernet points around the house for local networking purposes

  • 17 automated C-Bus blind controllers

  • 6 zones of under floor heating

  • 5 zones of garden and pool lighting

  • 4 radiant heating panels within balcony ceiling

  • 3 pool heat pump feeds and automation

  • 2 automated heated towel rails

During the project the build of the house experienced delays and went over schedule. As a result, the window of time to complete the electrical work compressed. DNA Electrical responded by ramping up the man-hours, investing large amounts of overtime to ensure the project remained on track.

RESULTS

DNA completed work in November 2017, completing within the allocated timeframe, on budget and above all delighting the client. Mr Liew said “As part of a complex structure, DNA were able to bring to life our ideas about how the house would run, and incorporate some other nuances along the way.”

When asked about how his smart home has impacted his life, Mr Liew said “Remote CCTV monitoring is easy to use and something new to me. The Wiser 2 home control is also a good addition, which we added at the last minute. It is very convenient, and we couldn’t live without it.”
